Is your smile in danger of cavities? Cavities are the result of a breakdown in your tooth enamel to the point a hole has formed in your tooth. If this happens, the inner root of a tooth, including its pulp, is susceptible to damage and infection, which can cause tooth failure. Plaque buildup in conjunction with harmful acids is the leading cause of enamel erosion in your teeth. Cavity prevention can be used to help diminish or eliminate the risks associated with plaque and harmful acids.

Cavity prevention commences with proper oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing. Typically, you must brush twice daily and floss at least once daily. Look for brushes that have soft bristles and floss that will not tear. In addition, you can ask your dentist or look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on select products that have been proven to be safe and effective.

Some foods are more dangerous than others in terms of potential cavities. Highly sugary products and those substances that are chewy and sticky are some of the most harmful, as they can stick to your teeth and gums and continue to wear down your enamel long after feasting. Switch out these unhealthy products with a diet that is high in vitamins and minerals for a healthy smile.
