The 2017 School year is just about to start, and your child is likely all set with school supplies and new clothes. But is their smile ready? To encourage good attendance, helping your child stave off tooth decay and gum disease will help them stay healthier throughout the year. To assist with this, our dentist, Dr. Robert Doyle, is happy to share a few beneficial strategies to protect their smiles.

Oral Hygiene: To give your child the best possible oral care, you will want to make sure they are cleaning their smiles daily. As part of their school “supplies”, give them the following new oral health essentials: a soft-bristled toothbrush, a fluoride toothpaste, a dental flossing method they enjoy using, and an antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash which has the American Dental Association Seal of Approval on the packaging. This means the products are proven to be both safe and effective for optimal success.

Nutrition: Help your child build healthy bodies, teeth, and gums by providing them with proper nutrition. Limit sodas and sugary drinks, and stock up on drinking water to encourage healthy hydration. Also limit sugary, starchy foods devoid of nutrition by filling their lunch packs with slices of fruit, vegetables, dairy and lean meat. These smile-friendly foods will give them the boost and staying power they need to succeed.

Oral Health: You can supplement your child’s daily oral hygiene efforts with bi-annual dental cleanings and checkups with our dentist. We can rid their smiles of tartar and check for dental issues. If needed, we can also provide fluoride treatment or dental sealants to further protect their teeth.
